Zurich Summit
Mats Frey, Benito Mueller, Anita Wasser, Lars Wiebe
The visit of the two MGM bosses Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca gave us a boost for the challenges the industry is facing. Abdy received our Game Changer Award at the Summit dinner because, as president of MGM, she did not sell lucrative titles to streamers, even though they offered a lot of money for them. Abdy and De Luca are advocates for cinema, yet they are not oblivious to developments in the industry. The Zurich Summit is also an important platform for the DACH region. Thus, the participation of Netflix DACH Manager Lars Wiebe was a good sign for the industry, as was the discussion on the topic of co-production in Europe. In addition, Afghan director Shahrbanoo Sadat, who had to flee Kabul a few weeks ago, showed us that our role as spokeswomen for socio-political issues is more important than ever.

This year we increased the support of the Swiss industry with our first Oscar screening to help launching their Oscar campaign. The legendary tennis tournament, was won by a DACH trio and we closed the weekend with the concert of the Montreux All Star Band.
Mixing the Industry
Leading FeMales in Film
Mix and mingle in all possible ways. The festival kicked off with the Industry Reception followed by the Soirée Française at Frauenbadi. Filmmakers from the official selection met each other daily at the Filmmakers Pre-Drinks before they hit the carpet or met at the festival ark to meet their animal soulmate. Of course, we did not just drink, we also discussed burning topics in a great range of industry sessions. We shed light on the work of an intimacy coach with a special workshop intimacy on set. The SRF Writer's Day focused on writing for series and the stamina a creator needs. The Leading FeMales panel welcomed the super women: Swedish director Linda Hambäck and the producer duo Christelle Younes and Reine Semaan from Lebanon to discuss gender equality in the film industry.
ZFF Academy
ZFF Academy: Master Class Session
The ZFF Academy started their fully packed 5-day programme on Wednesday. Our ‘School Trip’ for New Filmmaking Talent brought together 17 filmmakers from around the world. The heart of the program were again several masterclasses held by high-profile filmmakers and producers Paolo Sorrentino, Eskil Vogt, Ada Solomon, Asif Kapadia, Paul Schrader and talents from a new generation like Ninja Thyberg, Ulises Porra and Silvina Schnicer. Again one of the most helpful sessions though was the Bits & Pieces section, that allowed the participants share excerpts from their current projects on the big screen in front of their peers who then provided feedback and advice for each other. While real experts joined for the ‘elevator pitch’ a fun workshop where every participants had 34 seconds to ride up and down a real elevator and pitch their projects.
The Sound of Zurich
Montreux All Star Band
We’re turning up the volume on our “Sounds” label in order to make the subject of film and music even more audible. It is an initiative we started years ago with the launch of the Film Music Competition, and expanded by collaborating with the film music conference SoundTrack_Zurich and the Montreux Jazz Festival. The events included panels, discussions, concerts, special screenings with a live scoring and with a live commentary by a film composer. The programme was complemented with matchmaking sessions and informal get-togethers to link the opportunities for the music and film industries.

Thanks for joining the ride.
